Laura, the spring may be for a thread spool pin. I have several Featherweights that have a spring like this and they keep a spool from spinning on the pin.

Does the rubber looking thing at the bottom of the spring have a needle sized hole in it. I had one similar to this years ago and you could replace the needle with any size you needed. The needle was best placed in the spring before placing in the machine. And the rubber end was on the top.

Laura, isn't it fun to use those old attachments? I love the fact that you are using the ruffler! I just found out how much fun the buttonhole attachments are!

I have seen those spring things Jan is talking about on my FW's. I would have assumed that your spring was something like the FW spool pin spring too. I learn something new all the time on here! Cathy is very knowledgeable about all the vintage sewing machines/attachments. I am very curious to hear whether that funny looking spring with the rubber foot does have a needle hole? If it is in fact a darning spring, I'd love to hear how well it works!

Ok, I "accidentally" just bought an amazing machine....

I was trolling on Ebay and saw an "Early White SMC" machine for $120 plus 33.27 shipping. with that most glorious of options "Make offer" I have kind of a rule about not paying over $100 for any machine, so I made the silly offer of $66.73 to make an even $100. I figured since it was 1/2 of their asking price, it would go the way these usually do, ignored or a quick NOPE... In this case I got a quick reply, but accepting the offer!!

Steve you find some of the best "accidents" to come home to live with you. Maybe I should just give you my wish list and see what you can find. I would so love to have one of those Howe machines, if only for display.

I have to put my sewing machine collection on hold for a while though. We sadly had to put down one of our horses this week, and we were so not prepared for that, as he was only 2. Between what it cost for a vet to come out, put him to sleep, then pay another company to come and get him, I'll be eating little more than ramen noodles at our house for awhile. Several hundred dollars we did not have laying around.
