Okay gang you asked for it and you got it! This will be a thread dedicated strictly to the attachments for the vintage sewing machines. It will be interesting to see what pops up in this thread and what we can learn from each other on their uses. So feel free to post away and make sure we have lots of photos so we can see them in action!

Thanks Billy,
DH is in the middle of restoring cabinet & cleaning (per your tute) my 1935 Treadle. Didn't come with any attachments so now I'll know what I need :)

Nanamoms 07-22-2011 09:15 AM

I will certainly be here a lot cause some of them look like alien instruments! :)

SewExtremeSeams 07-22-2011 09:28 AM

 Now I might have to learn how to use some of the many attachments that I have collected in order to be able to post photos. The ruffler is the one I am most interested in.

Here's a common foot just to get it out of the way. ;)

Singer Rolled Hem Stitch Attachment
"SIMANCO 120855"

This one is in nearly everyone's attachment box.
I've used it to hem a table skirt for the cutting table in my sewing room.
This is demonstrated on my 221.
It takes a little practice, but using "Londa's Technique" as I found on you tube, it's not as difficult as you may think!

Ok here goes with over 30 photos I haven't demonstrated all because I don't have machines for all.

My old Sears Commander with a zig zag attachment

I tested it out - it will NEVER replace my Singer 403. I had a tough time trying to adjust it's width. At first it was hung up on the thread cutter.

Then I got the darning foot out and tested it. I've never used one so it was pretty exciting to test.

Then I dug out a hemmer - I used one once on a Viking and was totally frustrated. I can see how this one is a bit easier to use. It is a bit wider hem than I tried before.

I don't know what this one is - maybe someone is better informed

one toe and a wide slot for the needle - not a real great picture

This is a group pic of a bunch of short shank attachments

Then I tested out a short shank blind hemmer - It took me a while but I did get it to work - I really like it. The foot keeps things lined up so you don't grab too much material - the result was a very even looking hem.

This little gadget is kind of intimidating. I've not tried it. I need moral support to manage that thing. I think it needs some clean up and the bands replaced at some point. I have a couple more of these - this one doesn't have a feed dog cover in the box.

miriam 07-23-2011 06:16 AM

Some kind of hemmers looks like it would fold fabric - I don't know how they work - they were in the same box

miriam 07-23-2011 06:16 AM

Another box of attachments

just a hand full of Greist short shank attachments - not all have the instructions with them

I think this is a WHATZIT

I had a time getting a picture of this thing - it is Y shaped and looks like maybe something to do with a binding - any ideas?

This looks like a bias foot - I've never tried one - any tips?

the machine is so shiny you can see the tension in the reflection

Still another box of attachments - no idea what they go to

These seem to go on the machine different from anything I've ever seen

Buttonholer for old Kenmore - odd way to attach to the machine

kind of blurry isn't it. It is a very neat box though - I love the way it was made

It attaches a bit different from any I've seen

huge and very heavy - for a big shank

from the same box - no idea what they came from

kind of long needles in there

Ok so the famous pinker - still untried by me - I need an accomplice to do some of these - two heads might be better than one...

looks like some cleaning and oil wouldn't hurt much I wonder what kind of blade you would have to come up with?

buslady 07-23-2011 07:40 AM

WOW, that is a lot of neat stuff!! Amazing how many different things they had back then, and most of them haven't changed much over the year.s

Charlee 07-23-2011 07:44 AM

Miriam, when I get home from work, I'll pull some of your photos and label the parts for you...

Your top clamp attachments go to a White, National, uhmmmm...there are some others that I can't think of right now...

SewExtremeSeams 07-23-2011 08:23 AM

Thanks Miriam. They are all so interesting including your USOs :D

vintagemotif 07-23-2011 08:59 AM

Miriam, Thanks for posting photos of all your cool attachments! And demonstrating how some work too!

This looks like it will be a very helpful thread. :)

Those look like the Greist attachments that I have. You need another attachment to fit them on. You can get the attachment for either a short shank or long shank. I found the attachments on ebay but didn't buy one. I have a whole box of Greist attachments that were given to me. You had another pic with the same kind of Greist attachments.

guaranteed it was a different box. So they have to have a holder to go on the machine?

Those look a lot like the attachments that go with my c. 1900 Standard Treadle machine. This was a black tin box lined with purple velvet. Attachments include various sizes of hemmers, an underbraider, ruffler, and tucker.

What does an underbraider do? Sounds interesting!
