Wanamaker badged Smith and Egge sewing machine
1 Attachment(s)
I have decided that this machine needs to worked on and so bought it from shopgoodwill.com. This youtube link shows you a similar machine that I hope my baby Wanamaker will glow like. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7xolM1ozp0 Mine did not come with the fancy table or treadle. Wish me luck!
I'm still searching for information on this particular treadle. The best site I have found so far is this one: https://sewalot.com/smith_&_egge_sew...little_gem.htm Anybody out there have one of these? |
I believe your machine was made by National, not Smith & Egge. Smith & EgWge made small chain stitch machines, not a full size (that I know of). Sewalot said it looked like a New Home, but I don't think so, even though they did make some for Wanamaker. Wanamaker was one of the badge names that National made per http://needlebar.org/main/makers/usa...l/index.html#w I can't quite tell which National machine yours is, but you can see it is very similar to the VB-Types as seen at http://needlebar.org/nbwiki/index.ph...uttle_Machines The ISMACS needle list does not list Wanamaker by National.
It looks like it has a broken needle. I think that this era of National machines took a 20x1 needle. If that is the case, some have dropped a15x1 needle a bit and will sew with it. Janey - Neat people never make the exciting discoveries I do. Not affiliated with off-site link(s) |
Wanamaker badged NATIONAL vibrating shuttle machine

Thank you!! I'll go check out National and see if I can track it down. I agree that it must be a National vibrating shuttle sewing machine. At first glance to the table you have, perhaps VB-TT Type 5? Nice low bobbin winder, pillar screw and the last of the series with that weird tension device on the top of the machine. Great link!
The needle area on mine definitely looks frozen and may have to be completely replaced. I don't have this machine in my hands yet so I am working off the pictures from the auction. Thank you for these additional trails of information to follow! Hurricane party at my house in central Mississippi. Come on over! |
YOur leaf tension devis has an arm taht needs realaigned. The should be on top of each other and paralllel to the machine. I love leaf tensions. So much easier than dials.
|
Thank you for letting me know. I now have something new to search for online.... "leaf tension". I am still hoping the machine isn't frozen up. I suspect my Wanamaker will be stuck at the post office longer than usual because of the interference of Hurricane Ida. I will post more pictures when it arrives. I'm hoping for a model number under one of the shuttle plates...

I don't think the serial number will help much for this machine.
As Leon said, the leaf tension will need realigned. There are a couple of threads here on QB have picture of how the leaf tensions are supposed to be lined up, one even threaded. https://www.quiltingboard.com/vintag...s-t309297.html https://www.quiltingboard.com/vintag...s-t309297.html I hope you have a good supply of sewing machine oil.https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/wink.png Janey - Neat people never make the exciting discoveries I do. |
I am reading through all those posts and creating my shopping list, lol. Thank you for all your guidance!

I'm fairly certain, that the instructions at http://needlebar.org/main/manuals/re...ay/1index.html would help with the threading, but maybe not for the bobbin winder as the instructions are for an electric machine. Machine is here!! It isn't frozen up! No shuttle bobbin in place. No serial number but there is a plate with needle suggestions. Once I start actually cleaning this I will post pictures. I have a house full right now so I'm keeping it protected. No fancy head plate. It is badged "Wanamaker Special". The decals on the base of the machine are really degraded. Lots of color left in the vertical decals. I cannot find Evaporust nor PB at my Lowe's or Home Depot. I'll keep reading the threads so I can figure out what substitutes are possible. It is much lighter than I expected it to be! I can't wait for everyone to leave so I can start cleaning it! After everyone is in bed tonight, I'll be online searching for more info. Thank you all for your help on this journey!!!

you can start off by oiling everything that moves..or should move.
Have fun with it. |
