My husband just called me to tell me about a phone call he just received. He had left his number with a lady at an antique store a few weeks ago because she had had a customer in wanting to sell an old Singer treadle. The phone call he just got was from the woman selling the machine. It went like this....

Woman: "Yeah, I got your number from the lady at the antique store. She said you was wantin' to buy an old sewing machine."

Husband: "Yes ma'am. Is the machine you've got in good shape?"

Woman: "Oh yeah, yeah. It's perfect. The string on it ain't hardly wore out at all." (I'm assuming she was talking about the belt)

Husband: "Well how about the cabinet wood, is it all still nice?"

Woman: "Yeah, it's real pretty."

Husband: "Could you email me a few pictures of it if I give you my email address?"

Woman: "Well no I can't do that but I'm gonna put it on eBay so you could look at it there."

Husband: "You can't email me pictures but you can put them on eBay? Anyways, how much are you wanting to get for your machine?"

Woman: "Well now it's real nice and my gramma, she says it's older than her so I was wantin' to get 'bout $15,000 for it."

Husband: "$15,000?!!! Ma'am, the nicest ones out there don't bring but about three, four, maybe five hundred dollars on eBay."

Woman: "Well now, they ain't got what I got."

Husband: "Let me ask you this, is the machine made out of solid gold or something?"

Woman: "Uh, no it ain't gold."

Husband: "Well I can tell you that we're wasting each other's time. Have a nice day."

Some people are seriously crazy! LoL

janedennis 05-05-2010 09:48 AM

Sounds to me like she is talking about something else entirely

BKinCO 05-05-2010 09:50 AM

ROFL. Seriously! That is the funniest thing I've heard in a long time. Now we need to watch for it on Ebay!

Rebecca VLQ 05-05-2010 09:52 AM

Quilter7x 05-05-2010 09:58 AM

OMG Rachel, your hubby must have be laughing like crazy now! That is really funny.

Pam 05-05-2010 10:23 AM

Rachel, since you two have saved $15,000 on that sewing machine, there is a pothole in my driveway you may to consider investing in. It is NOT old, nearly new, hardly used at all we got it just his Spring. It is a deal, only $7,000! That generously leaves you $8,000 for some old sewing machine that is older than someone's Gramma.

BKinCO 05-05-2010 10:25 AM

LOL. Sounds like just about as good of an investment ;)

Charlee 05-05-2010 10:28 AM

Well now...depending of course, on what the lady has, it *could* be worth that much! (I seriously doubt it tho)

The most expensive treadle to date, that I'm aware of sold at auction for 23,500 British pounds or $41,000.00. Here's the link for it...

This guy has a fasinating site with a lot of information on these old machines!

momto4 05-05-2010 10:30 AM

That lady was just cooky or greedy im sure. Either way your hubby and all of us got a good laugh out of it. I highly doubt she has anything worth that much. She didnt even know proper terminology so that makes me think shes just trying to "get rich" JMHO though :)

quiltsRfun 05-05-2010 10:31 AM

Got a chuckle out of this one. Talk about someone who's out of touch with reality!

Candace 05-05-2010 10:35 AM

i'm guessing this woman didn't put the machine in the antique store you guys stopped in at because her reality is quite different than anyone else's. Ha!

JJs 05-05-2010 10:38 AM

really tho, a lot of people seem to think these old "antique" machines MUST be worth a lot of money just because they are old - to them, old/antique = worth a lot.
Never mind that a gazillion of these machines were made.... they've only seen the one THEY have so it has to be worth a lot.
A guy with an "antique" junk shop out on the highway told me one time that the old machine heads are worth more as junk because they are so heavy - and he'd sell them for junk before selling at a reasonable price.... at which time I told him, 'go for it'
I've also seen some REALLY bad shape ones in 'antique' stores for ridiculous amount of money - I'm talking rusted, frozen, broken irons, etc...
One woman who is convinced she's an 'expert' at getting them running just knew the ratty ones she had were worth hundreds - I might take them if she gave them away but would not pay for the ones she had...

pstoner 05-05-2010 10:43 AM

Shoot, I will sell you mine for half of that, LOL. Sorry as my DH said: One man's treasure, is another man's junk.

Charlee 05-05-2010 10:49 AM

JJ, the thing is, with guys like that, the price of these old machines can only go UP! :) (The fewer machines around = higher prices)

LoL!! Sounds like you likely have ocean front property in Arizona to sell too! :D

I can't say for total certain that this woman didn't have a machine worth $15,000, but I'm fairly sure she didn't and is just out of touch with reality. I remember as a child finding an old little girl's shoe down in the cabin on my grandmother's beach. I kept that dumb thing for a long time totally convinced it was worth some money because it was "old". :)

Charlee 05-05-2010 12:11 PM

~laffin~ Have you seen Antiques Road Show? That old shoe might have been worth THOUSANDS!! ;)

Ever notice on that show how the stuff that's worth the most is the most butt ugly stuff that exists? Especially the vases...

Chasing Hawk 05-05-2010 12:12 PM

OMG!!! She must have a touch of the vapors.........LOL

cjomomma 05-05-2010 12:28 PM

I got 1 word, CRAZY.

You aren't kidding! With most that stuff I say to myself, "I wouldn't give 10 cents for that if I saw it on the side of the road!" :)

raptureready 05-05-2010 12:47 PM

I've got at least a dozen really old machines, some are beautiful, working antiques but I don't think they're worth 15,000 if they were all together. If fact, throw in the quilting machine, frame and all my newer ones and they still wouldn't be worth that much.

Pickles 05-05-2010 01:02 PM

Makes you wonder if one should laugh are feel sorry for the poor demented person.

That was a fascinating site indeed, thank you for posting it! I love his humor. See this page on his antique sewing machines:

Kitsie 05-05-2010 01:31 PM

That's too funny! I could buy 3 of my "dream" machines for that!

Gal 05-05-2010 01:42 PM

Sounds like she was trying to sell you a VIOLIN!
Gal

Oklahoma Suzie 05-05-2010 02:08 PM

guess, you don't want it then. lol

stitchinwitch 05-05-2010 06:07 PM

Scam, scam and scam! Why do people do that?? I am checking out ebay to see if I can find it!

stitchinwitch 05-05-2010 06:13 PM

yep - someone has been smokin their socks - the highest priced antique sewing machine was just over 3K - NOT 15,000.00!

Norene B 05-05-2010 06:14 PM

I bought my Singer Treadle for 15.00 here in South Dakota and it worked great. Sold it on my auction, kicking myself every day.

LeslieSkelly 05-05-2010 06:31 PM

Good grief!!! Crazy people live out there!!!

akrogirl 05-05-2010 08:10 PM

We actually had an ad like that on our local Craigslist not too long ago. At the time, I just thought the poor guy had made a typo, but maybe not.............

sharon b 05-05-2010 08:25 PM

It was like others said, they think because it is "old" it is worth a LOT  Not to say it wasn't but gggeeesshhhh, why do they think just cuz you want it they can try and gouge you for it ! Hope she does really well on ebay :?

amandasgramma 05-05-2010 08:33 PM

She thought she had someone who REALLY wanted her machine pretty bad....therefore, she jacked up the price!! I hope....I REALLY hope she understands she won't get it!!!! ROL!!!

Charlee 05-05-2010 09:03 PM

There's an industrial treadle on our CL, listed at 10,000.oo!

Kyiav10 05-05-2010 09:33 PM

If you find the ebay add you MUST post the ad so we can all see this $15,000.00 sewing machine!

Kyia

raptureready 05-06-2010 05:14 AM

I just had to look on ebay last night. There was one that looked like it might be the "one", it was listed at $14,995.
The discriptions said, "Old sewing machine. Top has had some repair, most of the moving parts are missing......" Sure sounded like something I'd want to invest a lot of money in. LOL

FunkyMonkey 05-06-2010 05:18 AM

we always say that people that want an outrageous amount of money for their stuff, like to sooo much they really don't want to sell it!
