OMG, I WAS WRONG!! The badges on the front of the machine are: 1. Nationally sold, Made in Japan. 2. Free from defects, guaranteed by mfg, I'm sorry - they were in a hurry to leave and I obviously projected what I thought I saw (the oval badge just said Good Housekeeping to me!) It's still very cool! Does anyone have any idea how to thread it?

You're missing an upper thread guide. It looks like it was either pulled out or snapped off. Either way, you'll need to install one before you can thread it properly.
