The first one does not look like a 401A to me. Could it be a rocketeer?

The first one is either a 403 (the same as a 401 but has to use cams - even for regular zigzag you need the zero cam- instead of built in stitches like the 401a) or a 404 which is a straight stitch only machine.

The first machine is a Singer 404 the second one is a Japanese 15 clone

Hmm. I think I must email her . . . Wouldn't she have gotten the model number off of the machine? oh, maybe she got it from the Manual, and it covers more than one model . . ??

It does look rocketeer ish!

gonna call about the sad one today! I'll keep yall posted.

Those all all just good old straight stitch machines. They are very common and usually stitch well. The first cabinet is lovely, though.
