Default Singer 27

I've just bought my first antique machine!

I think it's a 1905 Singer model 27. It's almost complete, I can see the spool pin and front bed slide are missing so I'll need to find replacements. The mechanism certainty works when I move the treadle which is encouraging. I'm going to clean it up and get it fully functional, I've already found some useful links on this site.

The body of the machine itself has no flowery decals and the cabinet is very plain looking so maybe it's a budget version, did they make budget ones? I'd post a picture if I knew how.

Welcome. Yes, some of the early machines and cabinets could be plain or highly ornamented.

We like pictures. In order to post pictures on Quilting Board, you will probably need to reduce or compress the picture to a file size that is smaller than 2MB. How to post images can be found at https://www.quiltingboard.com/attach...020-01-17-.pdf
Don't forget to scroll over to the far right to find and click on the "Upload" button.

I have found that only the big red "Reply" button or "Quote" work to give me the paper clip icon to work for adding pictures.

Some additional info regarding reducing images at post #4 and images for the scroll and upload button can be found at #5 of quilt block ID?

Welcome from Washington State, and congratulations on getting your first antique sewing machine! I am looking forward to hearing more about your machine. It would be great to see a picture of it!

Thanks everyone! Here are the photos.

The shuttle is there, no bobbins unfortunately so I'll have to track some down.

There is a small "4" stamped at an angle to the right of the B on the serial number, does anyone know what that means?

a kabob skewer can make a fine temp spool holder ( and you can use the rest for chasing fluff in the machine.
. Beautiful machine, quick set on the tension assembly. No clue about that little 4.

Nice looking machine, congratulations. I agree with Leon a skewer will work for a spool pin. The place that I used to get my vintage sewing machine parts is no longer in business. But the slide plate, bobbins and spool pins are available for your machine. When I first clicked on your picture of the machine, I got the impression that it might be a refurbished machine. I see by the serial number (I, too, have no ideas about the little 4 stamp) that indeed the serial number was allocated in 1905. I did find what I believe is the face plate #8210 that is for a 127K, With machines this old, it is not uncommon to find parts that had been replaced.

I checked http://ismacs.net/singer_sewing_mach...ic-decals.html and http://needlebar.org/nbwiki/index.ph...ine_Decoration but did not find a decal set like yours. However, there are possibly some decal sets that are not listed or shown.

Have fun with your 'new' machine. It really is fun to treadle.

I have ordered the new spare parts along with lubricating oil and some spare needles. I also found an old bobbin inside the shuttle which I hadn't noticed before.

Yes you are right about the faceplate being from a 127K, thanks for spotting it. The rear round plate is also from a 127K. So my machine is a bit of a mongrel but I don't mind at all.

A lot of these machines are mongrel, so good you don't mine. It looks to be in great shape and should be fun to sew with.
