Our T&S 778 came with the rubber feed dogs, somewhere in it's life they were replace with metal ones. Easy job, just two small screws to R&R the feed dog assembly.

I do know that most of the later plastic geared Singer machines I've got have the spiral cut gears on them rather than the original straight cut gears. These seem to last much better than the older design. I've got almost a new set of gears for my wife's 538 now, only missing the cam drive gear, and I made sure to get the spiral cut gears.

Still I wish I could find steel replacements.
