My local needlework store got one of these for $50 so they could hem needlepoint canvas. It's a treadle one.

I paid $1000. for a Singer model 20U industrial machine. It has zig zag and reverse. Sews heavy, lots of layers.
I love it because the industrial machines are very fast.
