Walking presser foot and old machines
Hello,
I have an older sewing machine (1950's White) and I am wondering if I need to get a special walking foot made for that machine or if they are universal? My machine came with a bunch of attachments but I did not see a walking foot. Thanks!

Low shank or high shank, straight stitch or ZZ, left or center homing needle. That's about all you need to know to get the correct version WF for your machine.
Sew-Classic { http://www.shop.sew-classic.com/ } has a section on how to tell what foot style you have. Then they sell WF's for many styles. I don't think they sell any for the left homing needle though.
WF are not normally found in the attachment kit that came with the machines.

If your machine is 50's, it should be side clamp and what Joe said goes. If it's 40's, it may take top clamp attachments, and then as far as I know - you are out of luck. So far, I've not seen a walking foot for top clamp attachments. Though if someone else has - please let me know.
