I am still finishing up step 1. I had to stop to do a square for the boom8 and to make my Doll Quilt. Then I had wonderful company stop by. My Grt niece and her two little girls. So not much sewing. BUT today looks like it might be a Jammy day and i will sew all day. (as soon as my daughter downstairs wakes up). Got to catch up. I love step 3. The colors that is.

I'm with you Fraew! This is my 3rd Mystery with Bonnie, and I feel no way qualified to pick colors for a quilt I don't know what it will look like!

You don't have to take out those stitches gardnergal! I just flip that block over, and hold the right side of the last stitching line down, and the left side just flip it up. That will make what looks like a tiny four patch in the middle. It only takes a second when you get the hang of it.

I'm going to do HST's (half square triangles), so mine will end up being a 4 patch. Top row will be a square on the left and a HST on the right. Bottom row will be a HST on the left and a square on the right.

I'm NOT using scraps, so all my fabrics for the blue would be the same, the background the same, etc. I have the "Triangulations" software, so will just print out the HST size I need and sew them that way. It is so speedy and the exact size you need always happens. To me, personally, this is the quickest and most precise way for me to do this step.

Thought I'd share in case anyone else just wants to turn their heads away from this project because of those rulers.

I used the Triangulations software last year when we had a lot of half square triangles to do. It does work great, and the triangles come out perfect. I printed it on newsprint (which I also use for paper piecing) as it comes off so easily. For those that don't know Triangulations is a software program that prints on paper, then you line up 8 1/2 x 11 pieces of fabric with front sides facing, place the paper one top and just sew on the lines that are printed. When you finish sewing on the lines, then there are other lines that you rotary cut and you get perfect half square triangles. This software has all different sizes of quarter square and half square triangles.

Well I finished sewing step 1 and started squaring them all up. got half way done and quit for the day.

I am so glad Jeanie posted the link to this on the Orca Bay thread..I would have never found you otherwise lol.

I am making half the quilt this time as I chose to make the quilt in oranges, yellows and blues and this will be the perfect Spring lap/throw quilt for my living room. I finished the geese yesterday and have last step all cut out will be sewing it tomorrow and Tuesday as I am off work. I haven't done the four patches yet because I wasn't sure which contsant color to use and when Bonnie said we weredonee with grey, I thought well I'll wait and see how it plays Out and pick my "grey" then. I have a hunch that the four patches will do a chain in the quilt so I want to see how the blocks turn out before I pick a color..is that cheating? LOL. And I am loving this mystery so far..much easier than last year..you know by this time last year we did some 350 HST, 240 QSt and 60 some strings lol..I don't know why I still remember the numbers but I know that quilt ended with more than 7500 pieces..DH counted them lol.

Love what everyone is doing so far.

Jeanie...thanks for the tip on the center seams on the 4 patch. I'll give it a try. It sounds much faster than the way I was taught.

I'm home now for awhile not more trips until after Christmas...
Thanks Jeanie for all your help...At first I was a little confused with the "4 patch center" I had to look at it a couple of time to understand what Bonnie meant. what this technique creates is 4 seams going in the same direction (pinwheel) so that when they are joined later on there won't be any twisting...they will nest (bump Up) against each other .. I will be working on step 3 tomorrow using the 4 patch way mentioned here...I really appreciate all the new ways to do a step...especially since someone else worked out the kinks!!!:)

You all are very welcome! I also saved and printed the directions for the Shaded Four Patch Tutorial. It looks like it would work real well! You just never stop learning, and that is a good thing!!!
