New York Beauty Quilt Along Begins Oct 1st

Hello!
This Quilt along is all about New York Beauty! It might just be my most favorite block. I have made a couple of quilts using this block and want to encourage anyone those who have seen these patterns and thought “no, way could I do this…”YOU CAN! The patterns are paper pieced. If you’ve never paper pieced it’s easy and you might just find that you love making blocks using this method. I won’t lie to you this block can be a little challenging with the curved piecing but there are some tips you can read about here:

http://quilterscornerclub.tripod.com..._beauty_1.html

New York Beauty Quilt Along will begin Oct 1st. We will do two blocks a month making 4 of each. Our thread will be used to encourage each other, give tips on each of the blocks, and to post pictures - because we all love to see each other’s work. There are 10 different blocks that we will be making on our quilt along. This block sizzles when you use contrast complimentary colors here is a great site for choosing color combinations:

http://colorschemedesigner.com/

Some history on New York Beauty, the block was originally called Rocky Mountain Road or Crown of Thorns. The current name New York Beauty came about in the 1930s when Mountain Mist created a pattern and gave it that name. Bill Volckening has one of the most extensive collections of these quilts from the 18th to 21st century. Watch a video on Bill’s collection http://vimeo.com/12412485
Block patterns can be found here

November: Blocks 2 & 3
December: Catch up month we’re all busy this time of year.

Good luck SulaBug :D :D :D

kristen0112 09-03-2012 05:33 AM

The video is fantastic! The quilt collection is exceptional and I loved to hear him speak of the quilts piled in the back of his vehicle...lol! I'd love to try a beauty! Thank you for your informative post.

FLQ 09-03-2012 05:55 AM

Oh yeah! I thought of my batik stash for this set.

I always find it fascinating when men are into quilts. Some of them are so creative and talented. In the modern Beauty I think batiks look fantastic but I have also made them with some blender fabrics. I really like looking at the older beauties, and I wonder what a modern one would look like with the sashings with the 'thorns' I might try it. I live in Oregon where Bill lives and hope to see it sooner than later. I am so glad you'll be joining us!

linynp 09-03-2012 07:27 AM

Oh wow I think I might give this a whirl!

Anael 09-03-2012 07:38 AM

Kristen, your block is gorgeous! It sure inspires but I guess time is the issue, not the inspiration :D

Mariposa 09-03-2012 08:07 AM

Kristen, this is a great idea! Now I need to go peek through my stash to see what I'd like to use! :)
Love your block too!

wendiq 09-03-2012 08:36 AM

Would you be giving us a different NYB block each time? In other words, will you provide us the patterns each month?

I've made two of these type of quilts with great results......didn't do fancy, but learned that almost any combination using contrasting colors is dynamite! I have used batiks and blenders mostly.....

Oh BOY, I am inspired by your Batik fabric block!! :D One question, when we make four 8" blocks of each of the pattern's, are they suppose to be identical or in different colors? I just wanted to make sure as I haven't tried this pattern before. I plan to monkey around with it a little bit today!!
:D :D :D :D

Anael 09-03-2012 12:45 PM

I was wondering the same SulaBug! I only made the NYB block once for my Sylvia so I'm very new to this. When I look at the quilt in one of the links all blocks are different so it might not matter what you do.
Isn't it going to be a huge quilt with 4 blocks of each of the patterns?

OKAY!! :D I couldn't stand it any longer, so I got out some black & white fabric & made the beginner block, just for fun. It went together so quickly & I didn't have any problems at all. My DH really likes it & wants me to make more. So, I guess you would say that I am definately in!!
:D :D :D :D

Patticake 09-03-2012 02:32 PM

I'm in. At least I'll do my best! :)

Your block looks great! They are so fun. As for the blocks and making them identical that is up to each person. Personally I most likely make them all different. I am so glad you're in!

It seems like a lot but the blocks finished size is 8 1/2 inches the end will be 40 blocks, if we make 2 more blocks the quilt could be 6 across and 7 down. And of course because it's a quilt along you can always make more or less depending on how you want the finished size and layout to look like.

Yes, the initial thread has the link to all 10 patterns. And each month I will post it again if people want me to. You are correct that just about any color combination looks fantastic.

kristen0112 09-03-2012 03:36 PM

Mariposa, Linynp, & Patticake Welcome!
So glad you'll be quilting along with us. These patterns are great for stash busting and scrappy. But also look great in a classic two or three colors as shown in the video Beauty Secrets. I have pulled all my batiks (probably 15-20 different pieces) and a few blenders.

QuiltingKrazy 09-03-2012 03:39 PM

I might try this one.... I love the NY beauty block but PP any my brain just don't work! I think I am dyslexic (sp) when it comes to Paper piecing.

frustratedquilter40 09-03-2012 04:34 PM

I will also be joining in love paper piecing and batiks can't wait. I got to hear and see Bill V @ my quilt quild meeting in Hillsboro ,OR a few months ago he brought some of his collection very interesting hearing how he got started collecting and how it has evolved for him.

kristen0112 09-03-2012 04:45 PM

Welcome Christine and Quiltingcrazy! Christine so jealous you got to hear Bill V in person :-)
Sometimes Quiltingcrazy that happens to me too with a piece :-)

Anael 09-04-2012 12:44 AM

SulaBug, your block is great! I just made a decision :D I'm going to finish my Sylvia blocks first before I start this project. I only (or still) have 33 blocks to go. So if you see a block here from me..........LOL kick me in the behind. I hope I can keep my hands off of the batiks I ordered last week so I can use them for the NYB!

mirabelle 09-04-2012 12:55 AM

Giving this a lot of thought !!!! I have an extra large box of batiks and just can't decide what to do with them. Maybe this is the quilt I should make.
It also coincides with the Pony Club sew along finishing.
If you see blocks from me you will know I am in...

gardnergal970 09-04-2012 04:28 AM

I'm trying to FINISH projects...not start them...but....maybe I'll jump in later. I'm bookmarking this.

newhomelizzy 09-04-2012 06:08 AM

I'm in! I have too many projects but love the New York beauty quilts.

rainagade 09-04-2012 09:00 AM

I'm in too.
Ohhhh noooooo. Doing a NYB has been on my bucket list. I have been collecting fabrics for a few years.
I am also collecting reds to do a Double wedding ring.
So there is only one thing to do, which is get started on that bucket list.

jclinganrey 09-04-2012 09:05 AM

Wow! How intriguing. I've been intimidated by this beautiful quilt pattern for years. I have also been looking for just the right opportunity to really work on my paper piecing. Two birds - one stone! Thanks for getting this started.

Will keep you posted.

knlsmith 09-04-2012 09:18 AM

Oooooo! I an definitely doing this!!! Thank you so much!

Renea, so glad you're joining us! To fun that your next thing on your bucket list is DWR because I am working on correcting a pattern for a variation of DWR call Flower ring and when this quilt along is finished was thinking about hosting that as a quilt along! I tried making it from an old book but it wasn't test before publication so the block came out wonky.

Welcome Jclinganrey and Knlsmith - this is going to be a great learning experience for paper piecing and it's such a pretty block!

kristen0112 09-04-2012 09:37 AM

Welcome Karen (mirabelle), Newhomelizzy, gardnergal970! I know how many projects we can get going and I hope to we get to see you coming along on our journey! Karen - love your user name if my son had been a girl his name would have been Mirabelle instead of Maxwell :-)

Anael.........I think you have made the right choice, as your Sylvia blocks need to be completed before starting this project. Do keep us posted on how your blocks are coming along. I would love to see picture's when they are posted. You can always do the NYC blocks whenever you are ready too.
:D :D :D :D

It's hard not to start another project especially when you have new fabric...its like an itch that needs to be scratched!

Anael 09-04-2012 12:20 PM

SulaBug, there's no Sylvia thread here on the board. I posted my blocks on the HGTV board but I can post some in the picture thread if you like.

Kristen, please :D :D I ordered some more fabric today and I had to go to the LQS and found some nice but very expensive fabrics there too. They're for another project though, started last Saturday and of course I had to join! But my batiks should arrive this week so I know I will be tempted to make at least one block.
I counted my Sylvia blocks and did it right this time, I'm down to 20 to go so when I don't spend my time here on the board ............

nygal 09-04-2012 12:41 PM

Oh I am so in for making a New York Beauty. In I am currently making the paper pieced sampler that is on the back cover of Alex Anderson's new updated paper piecing book! My whole reason for making it is so I can get experience before making a NYB. I am so excited!

ppquilter 09-04-2012 02:03 PM

Love to pp, may have to try this!
