I use two layers of flannel - coordinating colors/patterns. I make them rectangle. I think this shape gives better coverage on shoulder and upper arm. They are also a good shape to put on your lap when holding baby on his/hers stomach. My daughters and nieces used them under baby's head in case spit up dribbled down while baby was on his/her back. Saved many a sheet! No more babies in the family but I make them for charity.

I use pre-folded diapers from Walmart & flannel. I use this tutorial for mine & everyone seems to love them.

https://sewshesews.wordpress.com/200...loth-tutorial/

They are easy to make. I've asked several moms that I've given them to if they work good & they all say YES & that they could use more. So, that tells me something about these. I just use regular flannel. I pre-wash the flannel & the diapers. I've tried them both ways....pre wash & no wash & like how the pre washed ones look best.

I use the bar towels you buy at Kohl's. You get them in the kitchen cloths department. They are thinner than diapers but much cheaper. I just sew a wide strip of cute nursery fabric on one side.

I always used old-fashioned flannelette diapers, the plain sheet-style ones you fold. Folded them in half or quarters for absorbency. Never had a problem. Used the same when burping baby siblings when helping my mom.

i made a few of these with flannel. I love the way they feel, and know they will get the job done.
I'm looking for fabric for the dh, so he'll look manly while burping the baby.

I wound up making these as I like the shoulder protection. I couldn't, for the life of me, find any cloth diapers in the stores around here. I was in a time crunch and couldn't wait for an online order of them. They turned out very well. I found her pattern made them a bit smaller than I liked, so I made them with the full width of a piece of paper (8½"), minus the curve for the neck. I used two layers of flannel.
