My friend is always buying the zippers when they come into a resale shop she volunteers two days a week.

I was throwing them away too but then saw them used as loops or handles.

You can cut off the top part or you can cut off the bottom part. Whichever you do, be sure to tack the cut ends well so that the pull doesn't run off the top or the bottom.

I made a tote and wanted a zipper on it. I sewed the top part of the way-too-long zipper on the tote and left the bottom end hanging inside. Now, when that tote wears out, I can salvage the zipper to something else.

I like the little loops and handles, too.

Check out http://www.aliexpress.com

I've been ordering all kinds of stuff from them. Zippers, zipper pulls, purse hardware.....I haven't had any problems at all with any of my orders.
The only "bad" thing - it could take a month to receive your order. But you can't beat the prices!

Was it Long Creek Mills? 108 S. Webb Street in Gastonia.

I buy them from zipit or zipper island on etsy. You can buy a long zipper with lots of pulls from byannie.com but I don't know if they have small gauge ones or just the bigger purse kind.
