I am from SE Georgia. Retired December 2005. 2006 has been a great year for me to learn quilting. I am a member of several forums and everyone has been most helpful. I have a problem rotary cutting more than 2 layers of fabric at one time. Any helpful information would be appreciated.

How heavy is the fabric that you are trying to cut? If you are trying to cut something like denim, two layers at a time is good. You should be able to cut twice that amount of medium weight fabric, though. It is possible that your rotary cutter blade is dull. That can happen faster than you think. Try replacing the blade with a good quality new blade. Also, make sure that the bolt that holds the blade is tightly fastened. The nut on my favorite rotary cutter works loose easily.The slight wobble, that I can't even feel, causes difficulty in cutting.

Yes, your blade could be dull or loose or too tight...or maybe you're not putting enough pressure! The blade needs to be tight enough not to wobble, yet loose enough to turn easily when you roll it along your cutting mat. One of my friends was having trouble just the other night with her rotary cutter skipping. I checked to make sure it was not nicked or too loose or too tight, as she said she had recently replaced the blade, then did a test cut myself & it worked fine. We decided she just wasn't pushing down quite hard enough! Sometimes it is the simplest solution! :D

I had a strange experience recently. I bought (yet another) new rotary cutter and although I loved the feel of it in my hand, it just was not cutting right. Hubster is my technical advisor so I asked him to look at it. Turns out there were 2 blades in it! We know because the blades are oiled they sometimes stick together. This must have happened in the factory because no where on the packaging did it suggest that there were 2 blades.
