    Hello!

Hi from PA originally from West Virginia. Recently started machine quilting. I helped my mom hand quilt while growing up but never finished a quilt on my own. When my dad was having issues with Dementia we would stay up long hours and would quilt to pass the time. He passed in Dec 2011 and then my mom in Dec 2012. She has a quilt top for everyone in our family for me to quilt. I am nervous about machine quilting her hand sewn tops but I am not a hand quilter. I have made quilts for my grandchildren but I knew if they weren't perfect I would be forgiven. Anyway, I joined this board hoping to learn tricks and tips in machine quilting other than stitch in the ditch.

Howdy & Welcome from the Texas hill country.

Don't you worry about "how" you quilt those tops... just "do" it. They will be fine. And you will have carried on a family tradition.

Welcome from SC Texas. I have the same problem, my DM did nothing but hand quilting and I have several of hers that are almost finished. I have RA and can't hand quilt so I have done nothing with them. Would love to finish one beautiful butterfly one she had started for me. I hope you find what you need here, there are so many great quilters here.

Welcome from Ontario, Canada. I enjoy hand quilting but I am very slow at it. I am teaching myself how to machine quilt so I can get some quilt tops finished. There is nothing wrong with SITD if that is where your skills are at. There are some good continuous line patterns you can do with your walking foot to branch out a little. Try the orange peel design or crosshatching quilting patterns.
When you feel ready you can move onto doing some free motion quilting with your darning or FMQ foot. A good site for FMQ ideas is www.leahday.com or her free motion quilt projects.
