There's a pattern called "Film strip" where you take say 2.5 squares and add a white or off white between each of the colored squares.....making sashing adding a white strip on each outside edge. I tend to use this when I need to add width and/or length to my quilt. Uses up the leftover scraps from the main quilt.

Pretty quilt. To save time and perhaps a little sanity, I would cut 2.5 " strips, maybe 12-16" long, sew together into one piece, then sub-cut into 2.5" strips, and by turning every other strip around, you can achieve the random look which I think you are going for.

This is what I do also, making the strips the width you need, ie; if you need 1" squares, make the strips 1 1/2", etc. and then cutting the strip sets into an equal width. I add even more variety by changing the number of strips in each set, from 3 to 7. Then you can break up the repeat pattern by not only turning the strips around, but also by inserting shorter sections between the longer ones at random intervals.
Just be sure that the fabrics are all different in each set, or at least that the sets don't begin or end with any of the same fabrics or you could end up with 2 the same next to each other.

Very nice. I have spent the last three days in our cold Michigan deep freeze using my 2.5 birthday swap squares. I like this as an alternative to my "Chicklets" pattern.

I agree with mike'sgirl ! Take 5 inch long x 2.5 inch wide strips and sew them together and subcut - by making many of these 5x2.5 pieces you can make the pattern really random.

Oops that was many 2.5 x 2.5 strips then butt them up and sew them to make a long chain.
