Does anyone know about these machines? There was a flyer in the local shopper type paper today saying the 2009 Instructional Sew & Serge machines will be available tomorrow only and if you have the ad it is only $199, $529 without the ad. Says they can sew all fabrics, even leather, and have metal gears and hooks, and you can put it on layaway and has a 25 yr limited warranty. Also says not sold in other stores or on the internet. Ive never heard of this brand. Im going to go look at it but wanted to see if anyone has this brand or knows anything about it?

I bought one of these machines about 5 yrs ago. They usually set up at large store, hotel, or community center to sell them. I liked the machine although I never used the serger function. If I remember correctly, there was 3 price level; I got the middle one. Google Necchi-check the reviews. I believe it's made by White; good reviews.
The only reason I don't still have it is because I "needed" a new machine with all the bells and whistles (which I still haven't figured out all of them). I gave the Necchi to a friend's dtr and she's using it for all types of sewing including denim jeans. It is a very heavy and sturdy machine.

I would be really hesitant to buy one of these Instructional Sew & Serge machines. It sounds like the machines that fabric stores have a "school machine", usually a Singer, they are pieces of junk. Our group bought a Singer "school machine", it was only used maybe 3 times, before it fell apart. If you're on a budget, I would go to a dealer and see what they have in trade-ins that fits your budget. My opinion.

I have found that most machine repair will not work on the Necchi machines, you may want to call one close to you and ask about these machines being sold in mass like this from the sale. I have good and bad things about Necchi sewing machines. The manager of a Hancock's Fabric store would let the truck set up in the parking lot. He told me If you can get the machine the person is demoing on then you will get a good machine. And if they will not let you open the box, try it out, do not buy it. The excuse will be no room, insurance factor, not allowed, no electrical, SPEAK up and say, unplug your machine and plug in one from the box and you demo on that. If the sales person won't to that, then take your money and run and take everyone there with you.

I LOVE my Necchi. It is a work horse. the serger part is just a side trimmer. Give me a Necchi anyday. I bought the one i have now used. but years ago bought one from one of those sales.
The sew n vac store in our nearest town only sells Necchis. and used machines people have traded in. the owner is also a very good repairman.

This is not a better deal than you can get on other machines. I would not buy one of these machines without first having tried out Janome or Kenmore machines with similar features and price. Here is a link, for example, to a Janome Jem Gold that many people here have and like:

It has been years since I sewed on a Necchi, but I remember them as being loud compared to other machines. Rightly or wrongly, I have always associated loudness with poor quality; my Bernina purrs!
With one-day sales pressure like this, you can be sure that the $529 price has been inflated. The 25-yr warranty isn't anything different than other sewing machines have; same with the features offered. As for the serging attachment, very few people ever use this. The stitch is not the same as a serger makes, the machine does not run fast like a serger does, and the cutting mechanism on the attachment is clunky compared to a serger. This is an attachment that can be purchased separately from the machine anyway.

Singer machines sold at these sales are not made by Singer but by Singer Inc. Singer Int'l. , other forms or Singer name. Singer has never made school machines just for schools, schools deal with a dealer just like any customer. So many think that are getting Singer machines. If you read the fine print on the ads, it states not affiliated with Singer in anyway. It really gives Singer a bad rep so many of these machines are crappy and then the buyers get upset when Singer won't repair or replace the non Singer machines. Buyer beware is the best approach.
