I did a search on Pinterest for "gray background quilts", hopefully you'll be able to see the results here: https://www.pinterest.com/search/pin...yped&term_meta[]=gray|typed&term_meta[]=background|typed&term_meta[]=quilts|typed

Your daughter might change her mind about the gray once she sees some lovely examples.
Yummy quilts! I like the grey so this really appeals to me.

She could always go with a background in beiges/tans like Edyta Sitar's quilts.

So many shades to ecru to choose from but I think a light sky blue might work.

She is open to that but do you think it goes with the brights that she is planning to use for the blocks?

When I don't want to use white or off white, I choose a very pastel color. I rarely use solids though, usually I pick marbles or other tone on tone prints. A pastel in yellow, gray or green would look pretty.
