If you do a 9-patch then a solid color and alternate them, you have an Irish chain. It is a pretty design. Rail fence is a real nice pattern also

I think 9 patch would be fun and easy.

Why not try a 10 minute block. Go to You Tube and check out the 10 minute block from design originals. This would be a very easy and quick first quilt. Then move on from there.

I agree, rail fence or 9 patch are probably the easiest for beginners.

Any other suggestions will be appreciated.

My first quilt was the Rail Fence and I am glad I started with that, it was not frustrating and I got a chance to start playing with color. I only used 3 colors and now 4 years later when I look at the quilt, I think what was I thinking putting those colors together.

I also like rail fence. Especially easy if you strip quilt it. You can do as few as three fabrics or as many as you like. Have a friend doing her first bed quilt in a rail fence with six fabrics. Three is one set of block and three in a second set and then alternating the blocks. Is coming out gorgeous.

I suggest you go to www.quilterscache.com and see what's there. There are so many easy blocks that deal with just squares and rectangles. Triangles aren't so bad if you learn an easy technique for half-square triangles. Once you've tried a pattern, it will be your favorite too. Rail fence and warm wishes are really easy and can be so stunning. Also look into the quilts for kids. They offer simple pattern suggestions that can work up very well even for larger quilts. I'm thinking of the one with alternating 4-patch and solid blocks or the one with alternating snowball blocks and solid blocks. Easy pattern, but great with great fabrics.

Disappearing 4 Patch is easy and fun and you can really do each block 4 different colors or use the same 4 colors, etc.

Thanks for including the picture. The quilt is so pretty. I have decided to make a baby rail fence.
