Applique advice sought! (Chicken pics added!)

I want to make a quilt similar to this one:

Here's my question... when you applique do you turn the edges under or to you rely on the staying power of your fusing web and just outline sew (buttonhole, zig zag or satin) around the the pieces???
I don't think this quilt will get a lot of wash and wear but it won't be hung either... I have so few large walls and almost all of them have furniture positioned against them!

I did some applique on a quilt I'm working on for myself, I used the steam a seam lite, I did a blanket stitch by hand around it in black because I like the look but I don't think it will come loose if you make sure you get a good adhesion

MamaGus,
I have done both. I made a quilt w/ fusible about 15 years ago. It has been washed numerous times. It just so happens to be a favorite of the kids/dog. I outlined the fusible pieces w/ a machine zig zag stitch. The edges have begun to finally "roll up".
In the essence of time, if it won' t be washed, I think you'd be just fine to use fusible w/ an overlocking stitch.

I almost always do fusible with machine blanket stitch. I havent had any problems yet with them not staying down. My mother made my 3 girls Sunbonnett Sue quilts when they were little so the quilts are over 20 years old now, I have noticed that there are a few places on them that are coming loose. She used a real heavy satin stitch and its like it perforated the applique piece. But these had a lot of wear and tear and many many washings!
