Default backing for baby quilt?

I found some plush throw that are very soft like minky, they are 50 x60 and I got them at walmart last year on sale for 3.00..I was wondering if I could use them for the backing for a baby quilt, the top is a pieced top made of cotton fabric.. would they go together ok...would it be a problem to quilt it?... thanks Carol

I used a couple of these on lap quilts for my son and SIL for Xmas; seemed to work fine but I didn't do any fancy quilting, just basically curved and straight lines to hold the pkg together. Also used a walking foot.

I just use regular backing fabric or any piece of 100% cotton. Quilt will be useless if the baby/child gets too hot while using it.

I never thought about the baby getting to hot as it gets pretty cold here in the winter...I just thought it would be really nice and soft if they put it on the floor for him to play on...also if I did use this maybe I should not use any batting, that would really make it a warm quilt if I did...I was thinking of just some FMQ something really big and nothing fancy..Thanks

I think you would be fine to use it. I have used Minky as backing and the baby quilts came out great. It is harder to quilt and sew with because of stretching, but if you keep it simple like you plan to do I think you will be happy with the result!

I use Minky on quilts all the time. I have one of my own, and it's wonderful and warm - not too hot at all. My LAQ said it's a little tricky to quilt, because it stretches, so you might want to watch that. Minky is 100% polyester, so I see no problem with the throw if it is polyester too. Good luck.

I'd use it. Everyone that gets a quilt with that on the back just loves it. I made one and took it to a baby shower recently, and the ladies passed it around so everyone could fondle it!

I use those blankets for backing all the time, and I do use batting. They are so soft and cuddly, I think you can't go wrong.

I have used those throws for backing--they are basically the same thing as fleece. This site has tips on working with minky and cuddle fabrics that may help
