A fabric seems to magically present itself as a great backing when I finish a quilt, so that is when I choose it. Sometimes it takes a while for the magic to happen, though.

I like the fabrics you're using for your quilt. No doubt it will be gorgeous when it's done!

I, too, think you're doing a great job on this quilt! And I like the colors. If you know the finished size of your quilt and you see something you like, go for it. I try to pick backings that compliment the top. That is, have some of the same colors and similar scale - usually. Sometimes there is something totally different that just screams 'me, me, me' for a given quilt. You'll know it when you see it. Just make sure you over-buy a bit so you have a bit of wiggle room if you need to piece the backing to get it to the size you need.

Actually I have seen alot of more muted quilts lately, so you are up to date! Call it 'low volume'...and no making excuses! You don't need to apologize EVER for your fabric choices. If someone else has a problem with them, its THEIR problem (can you tell I have had someone tell me my choices were WRONG?...um no, they are not WRONG, they are MY choices...)

I am very impressed with your color choices and your piecing! You can take yourself off the 'new quilters list"

PS Pick your backing when YOU are ready! If you see one you like, go for it! Sometimes I pick mine before the quilt is even started. Sometimes i piece one as I piece the quilt...and sometimes its an after thought. I just bought a backing for a mystery quilt...before the mystery started. Then I changed my color palette and that backing is ...well going back on the shelf! Ha!

it depends if you know the size of the quilt I would take advantage of a good deal. If you are new to quilting and going to guilt it yourself a busy print won't show any mistakes if you would make any.

Jan thank you for the backing designs! ...and everyone for the encouragement... I hadn't thought of piecing the back at all and now I am getting all kinds of ideas. Many thanks!

If I have to wait to purchase a back, there is a greater chance the top will become a UFO. I guess I'm always thinking one step ahead of what I'm doing so the enthusiasm for the finished product continues until it's actually done. I've been quilting long enough that I'm comfortable with the craft but I still do not put a pieced back on mine. My luck is that it would shift in the quilting and end up not being up to "my standard". The only piecing is to make the back bigger, not designed. I love the colors you put together in your quilt. As you said, very restful--and they compliment each other. As beginners, we tend to select a pattern we like, not necessarily because they are simple. Just jump in and you've done quite well.

Jan, You always give the ladies great ideas. I need to back a quilt and I'm going to try one of your ideas here. Thanks again for a great idea.

K-Roll, I like your quilt. Low volume or shabby chic it looks very nice. Jan I really like the backing ideas. Will have to keep them in mind.
