I think any color would be OK. I have one that I made in warm fall colors and the pattern and fabric for one that is wild and colorful.

I think it depends on what effect you are looking for. But most seem to have one fabric that is light, or more of a focal point.

Small, really small prints work okay. Blenders and batiks work well. Solids work well.

pick stuff that will coordinate with the smaller prints in your stash. Big and even medium prints are going to break up and diffuse your pattern. Let us know how it comes out. 12 to 15 fabrics altogether should do you well.

I used 12 fabrics on my bargello... looks lovely... just had a look and the patterns on the materials are small... put all the materials down in the order you think they should be and take a photo...or else look through your camera at them... you will soon see which ones clash.... then leave those ones out... good luck !!!

I've only done the one in my avatar, but it seems that smaller prints and blenders work best. Pick two colors, and get a really saturated version of each, with gradations of each until the lightest meet.

this might be a good excuse for purchasing some of the pre-cut packages from a specific vendor. YOu can see from how each fabric blends with another without guesswork.

The bargello I made had 20 different fabrics from two color groups. 5 from one (I used purple) and 15 from another (I used pink). I used some blenders, batiks and some small print fabric. The pattern I had called for 5/8 yard of each, but I'm not sure why because that was almost double what I ended up needing of each.
