I've been reading that basting spray is the way to go when sandwiching a quilt. I googled the internet for spray basting and it said it is not recommended for hand quilters. Have any of you hand quilters tried using the basting spray. It looks like it would be a lot better/easier than pinning the whole sandwich. Any ideas?

I only hand quilt and do a combo of spray baste and pinning. If you spray too heavily, then quilting is difficult and will tear your hands apart. The baby bargello i am currently working on will most likely get basted with stitching and pins instead. My wrists and fingers can't handle the spraying too much anymore.

I would spray baste lightly using 505, pin just the edges every foot so the edges don't come apart, and use a hoop.

Would add that the batting makes a *huge* difference in how easy (or not) hand quilting is. I would not use a batting that has scrim, such as Warm and Natural, because of the extra resistance. Hobbs 80/20 or Quilter's Dream Request would be good batting choices.

I have had absolutely no problem with using 505 - have not tried other sprays.

I haven't had a problem with 505 spray either. I do iron the quilt to dry it so as not to gunk up the needle.

i dont' have anywhere to spray baste, so i just thread baste..It's also cheaper...

I spray baste and then hand baste the sides of the whatever. And usually hand quilt. No problems except right now I tried Dritz basting spray because that's all that was available to me and it has quite a strong odor.

I spray baste and hand quilt and have had no problems. It is SO much easier than pinning or basting!
