Sharon Schamber has a great technique!
I never use pins on anything bigger than a crib size any more, and I haven't basted on the floor since I saw her video.
search for 'Sharon Schamber hand basting' video.
She uses 'rails' on a table top and if you use water soluable thread, you don't even have to take the basting out; just throw it in the wash! I use 8ft rails ( 96") you could use 10 ft for your big quilts.
