What do you use for the batting for your table runners? Can you use a table to replace a hot plate mat?

Depending on what use you have in mind - ie simply decoration or a more practical use such as placing hot dishes on it - I always use whatever is on hand according to the purpose.

I have finished doing a runner which is purely decoration and just used flannel as a batting. Recently I finished off a couple and used wool batting that was leftover.

I just use regular 80/20 batt for my runners BUT they are not enough protection for hot casserole dishes in my opinion. It would be fine if you had an arborite or glass top table but a good wood table might be ruined.

Fusible felt. I use hotpads/trivets for my casserole dishes. For those, I use the Insulbrite batting.

this was my thought, too. my aunt's table is very sensitive to hot or very warm dishes.

I wouldn't dream of putting hot dishes on my table runners! They are for show not for hot dishes!

I usually end up using my Hobbs 80/20 batting scraps.

I use Warm and White for my table runners in case I forget and put a hot pot on it. I know the scrip is poly, but I have not had issues so far.

I will be watching the responses to this thread. My little kitchen table is very dear to me (one of the few things I requested from my grandmother's "estate"). It is oak, and has painted decorations applied by my mother when I was a toddler. I have a roommate who means well, but it is just a matter of time before he puts something on it that he should not...possibly a hot pan. I was thinking about an edge-to-edge table topper, with maybe two layers of Insulbrite. I wonder if that would be enough.

Insulbrite is designed to work best with a single layer. I have put hot pans on it with my oak table & haven't had any damage.
