Yup, me too, make sure that black fork thing is wrapped around the screw. What you are describing has happened to me the first time I tried to use the walking foot outside of class  . Also, are you using the the quilting sole for the walking foot? Two come in the box, I am not even sure what the other one is for, but do make sure that you have the correct sole for your walking foot.

Good news!
If we used the walking foot everyday it would be simple to remember how exactly it goes on.

I had this happen recently, only to find out that I'd inadvertently pushed another stitch button while wrangling my quilt around while quilting. So, you might check to make sure all your stitch settings are where you want them to be.

I actually use my walking foot about 90% of the time--even when piecing. I find when I use my 1/4" foot for piecing, it seems the top layer always drags a little and ends up longer than the bottom layer. It's frustrating as it is harder to keep the 1/4' seam exact for piecing when I use the walking foot--but I just like using it because then both layers feed through the same. It is frustrating since I have a Bernina QE 440--so I have a quality machine. I love it otherwise. Am I the only one who uses their walking foot most of the time?

Here's a video from the Bernina site showing how to install the #50 walking foot that may be like the one you use. I thought it was pretty helpful, maybe you will, too.
