Can I just order the chalk and use it in a pencil I already have? That would be great.

grammy of 6,

As long as your mechanical pencil takes 0.9 mm lead, then it will work just fine.

Is there a difference in a mechanical pencil lead and a chalk lead?

In my experience, the white pretty much wears off and since I wash my quilts when they are done, any marks remaining are gone. The grey marks I spray with a product I bought at Nancy's Notions called Marking Pencil Removal from Quilter's Rule Int'l and again into the wash it goes. So far this has worked for me.

I use the chalk wheels and the Bohin white pencil and like them both. For light fabrics I just use a regular mechanical pencil. I mark and quilt, then erase as I finish a section, so none of it stays on the fabric too long. As for the chalk in the wheel, I just dust it off with a white terry hand towel. Never had a problem with any of them.
