The topic came up a day or so ago about teaching kids how to sew - specifically whether or not you'd let your (grand)child use a rotary cutter.

I went to Amazon.con and found the following books on teaching kids how to sew. You can always get these books through interlibrary loan ("always" at no cost) at your local branch of the library. I do this for quilting and embroidery books that interest me, and if after reading it I want it in my personal library, it goes on my Christmas & Birthday wish list.

Here's the list of five books on teaching kids how to sew, the reviews they received from readers/purchasers, and the price range offered on Amazon - they are in no particular order:

I was horrified when one of my 4H girls, who had never sewed before showed up the first night with a bright pink rotary cutter. she was showing it to everyone, waiving it around. Mom bought it for her, thought it would be easier to cut out patterns. I told her it had to be put away and now. She was not to get it out of the sewing box until I told her she could. Mom had no idea what it was and didn't even buy the cutting mat to go with it. I explained about it and mom agreed that she was not to touch it. Later I saw that it wasn't in the sewing box any longer. My girls range from 7 - 13 and I don't allow them to use rotary cutters. I like their finger right where they are. I told parents if they want to use them at home that was fine but they were not to bring them to the meetings.

I contacted the 4H extension office (an hr. away) and was told that yes there are books to use but I didn't need them. Just teach them to sew. Gee, thanks.

Thank you for the list of sewing books. I will check them out for my 5 & 9-year-old kids.
