Buying fabric at Walmart, Joann's, etc.....
#161
I am very lucky as we have a LQS that has their fabric for $6.95 yard, regular price. When they have a sale its $4.95 a yard. I guess it comes down to what each one of us prefers. With the cost of raw materials going up we may not have a choice soon.

Don't forget----doing applique does not require huge amounts of fabric except for backgrounds and borders. I also hand applique. Have used fabrics from WM, JoAnn, Hancock and LQS. Just be picky of the weave.

Made a blouse from JOAnn wall of quilting and it itched so bad, I got rid of it(was all cotton). Have made curtains from JOAnn and lovely kids prints. But tend to buy at online sales(priced like JOAnn) or more expensive great local quilt shop fabric. Try quilt in a day sales or fabric.com sales.

Let me tell you about what I have experienced. I made a quilt using a mixture of fabrics from LQ & Jo Anns. The fabric from Jo Ann's faded and it wasn't in the sun or any light so that tells me that if I want a quilt to last and still look beautiful, I must get quality material. Hope this elps.

I think if your making something special and want it to last forever it'll cost you but the LQS might be best depending on $$$ that you can afford. I'm making a king size wedding ring and I want it to last forever because it will be a lot of work and $$$ involved. Take your time and don't rush into buying I think when you go to the store and check out the fabric your hand will know the best fabric for your project. Good Luck. Sue

LQ shops, online, Wal-Mart, Hancocks, Hobby Lobby, JoAnn's, garage sales, Goodwill, Kidney Foundation Community Thrift shop, Habitat for Humanity Thrift store... where ever I find it and it is good quality. I have a quilt top I have been working on and the fabric will have cost me about $400 from the LQS. I won't do that again. Just shop around and use you fingers to "feel" the fabric. Ask yourself; can you "see" through it, does it feel skimpy, does it feel like silk as some really nice cottons can, is it too stiff or full of sizing, does it smell, etc. Most of all, I guess I go by "feel"...

Local Walmart discontinued their fabric/craft dept when they built a Super Store. I try to shop at Joann's and LQS 'cuz I want them to stay in our town. I do not live in a metro area with lots of options so feel I need to support to smaller stores.
