I kind of had the same question, so it's not as silly as one might seem.
Plus, since I teach EFL, I realize over and over that our pronunciation can be pretty arbitrary at times. Tonight I had the ough and augh sound. Bought and caught sound the same. :) though and thought are different vowel sounds though spelled the same.
I know the rules about the hard G and soft g usually coming when g comes before i, e, or y. But sometimes exceptions get the best of us.
Our English language is full of rules and then...EXCEPT for ...
