I made a quilt for my granddaughter and thought she would use it as a lap quilt. She used it on her bed. It was a little short but it didn't bother her at all. I think no matter what the size is they will love it because it remnds them of home. If I did it over I would have made it a little wider. They don't care about the length. Most have piles of pillows anyway. She used the risers so she could store things under the bed and the extra width would have covered all that.

I wasn't quilting when my daughter was in college, but we bought quilts for her dorm beds, a white one and a blue and yellow one. She stained both permanently by dropping her highlighting pen on the bed. Many dorm rooms are so small, students spend lots of time on their bed studying, visiting with their friends, eating, etc. I would recommend busy prints in medium to dark colors for hiding stains.
