I had that size in my dorm, too (back in the Stone Age... LOL!) & so did my DD. Better to make it larger & be safe.

I made a quilt for my granddaughter and thought she would use it as a lap quilt. She used it on her bed. It was a little short but it didn't bother her at all. I think no matter what the size is they will love it because it remnds them of home. If I did it over I would have made it a little wider. They don't care about the length. Most have piles of pillows anyway. She used the risers so she could store things under the bed and the extra width would have covered all that.

Twin XL;and sheets for those beds only seem to be in the local Wal-Marts at the end of summer (seasonal, I suppose).

My grandson lives in the dorm. His bed is a long twin and they are raised so there is storage underneath. We made him a queen size and he loves it.

Most dorm beds have LONG twin beds per the returning students reports.

Darker colors are preferred so anything that falls on the quilt [pizza crumb, popcorn. cola, coffee] won't show.

I'd go with a twin and make it longer as to the height of the person. One of my nephews is 6'4" so he got a really long quilt

I wasn't quilting when my daughter was in college, but we bought quilts for her dorm beds, a white one and a blue and yellow one. She stained both permanently by dropping her highlighting pen on the bed. Many dorm rooms are so small, students spend lots of time on their bed studying, visiting with their friends, eating, etc. I would recommend busy prints in medium to dark colors for hiding stains.
