Different weights of threads
#1
The last thread about "cone threads" gave me a second question. I was given several (sweat shop) cones but they appear to be silk or satin. Can they be used in quilting and if not...what?
Thank you for your help.

they are probably a rayon or polyester---and as long as they are strong enough there is no reason to use them-
if rayon it may break alot for machine quilting- but for embroidery it works nicely- poly is generally pretty strong thread and is used for piecing and quilting by many

Like others have said the best thing to do is test the thread. I watched a vidio and they say if it holds up to pulling and doesn't snap easy you can use it. I have always used cotton for quilting but now find I can use my embroidery thread if I want and I have over 288 colors so I may start using them for appliques and not for the quilting.
