No batting is your traditional"summer quilt"
my first quilt has a poly batting pulled in half
It is the best .....all summer long in Florida. Good luck and happy batting!

could you use a layer of thin flannel? it would give it a little warmth but not too much.

I made a "summer" quilt for my grandson and put one layer of white flannel (prewashed to prevent shrinkage)in the middle. It is much lighter than batting, and yet helps to prevent some of the problems mentioned by other members (backing showing through top, no definition in quilting, etc.)

Many people in warmer climates make what they call summer quilts. Just the top and the linning. Quilt as you wish, tie or quilt with a pattern. This is nothing new, been doing this for years.

Yes, you can. People who keep saying to add something thin for a batting so you can see the quilting obviously prefer beauty to comfort. I have two summer quilts with just front & back and even tho I keep my house at 70* at night, a quilt with any batting is too hot for me.

I think if putting a layer of muslin inbetween, this might be avoided. But great point.

On something like that I would probably put a layer of solid color flannel, or use a solid color flannel sheet. Try it and see if he likes that.

Great ideas. We are always warm so we only need a layer or two. We live in sw Florida.

How would you join two pieces of flannel to be used as a batting?
