I think that it makes a BIG difference in the completed block.
After a while it's just becomes second nature.

Yes, it does, especially if you are doing half square triangle blocks.
do it and you will see why it makes a difference

if you don't bother to set your seam before pressing to one side or the other the excess can be 1/8"---and that 8 times equals a whole inch!
so, if you are looking for precision- technical perfection- setting your seams is an important step
DITTO ALL THE WAY! I never used to set my seams before pressing them to one side or the other, but once I started I immediately noticed the difference.

I set my seams first because it gives the thread a chance to snuggle down into the fabric. Then when you turn the seam to one side it's all more copacetic (and it lays down better). I also am a big believer in steam.
