I am making for my son's girlfriend.

I swore I measured correctly when the fabric was folded on my cutting mat. I had it folded and cut it so I would have 1 huge rectangle that I would then just cut in half to get the 2 rectangles that I needed. So dumb me unfolded the fabric and cut it in half without measuring it since I had the fabric pressed/creased where it needed to be cut. Well.......

Now I have 2 pieces that are too small. I was thinking of just cutting 2 more pieces of the length that I need and sewing each piece onto the other pieces. I'm thinking...it's just the lining so no one will see it except Carol. So.....

Some of you more experienced bag makers...do you see any problem doing it this way?

Like I said...dumb question but...I don't have enough of the lining fabric that I bought left that I could cut 2 pieces the correct length...and it was very expensive even with the coupon at Joann's....$8.99 a yard. This is the bag that I spent about $65.00 on materials so I do NOT want to put anymore money into making this. And...I don't have a stash so having nothing here that would look/match the other fabrics that I am using from the jelly rolls that I bought.

how much too small is it? i've made several bags and have found that the lining is usually a bit baggy so when i remember i purposely cut it 1/2-3/4 inch smaller that called for

You can always piece it then place the pocket strip over the pieced line.

Another thing you could do is make the smaller lining material into pockets. I've done that before when I was making things without patterns.

I would go ahead and piece it together. Your son's girlfriend will never give it a thought unless she herself is a good seamstress. I'd try to place the lining so most of the seams could then be covered with inner pockets and I don't think anyone will be the wiser. Stuff happens, don't beat yourself up over it. Life is too short.

I don't see a problem with piecing. The nice thing about bags is that we can always make design options. You might even want to consider a complementing fabric for a 2 color lining. With linings, as far as I'm concerned, anything goes.

I would just sew the pieces back together and then cut them the right size - if that would work.

Or - if you have something that goes with the fabric - make a two-tone lining - and then it will look like you planned it that way.

I've done that too. I sure seem to make a lot of "creative opportunities" for myself!

I'm a Carol, and believe me, I wouldn't mind an extra seam or two!! Maybe put extra bag fabric to the ends, make that the end/gusset piece? in any case, if you don't mention it to her, , she won't ever know the difference!LOL

I appreciate all of your replys with advice. Each lining rectangle was supposed to measure 18 1/2" X 32 1/2". Each piece was 16" shorter than it was supposed to be. I should NOT have cut the piece in 1/2...don't know WHAT I was thinking...lol.

Carol doesn't sew at all so she wouldn't have a clue. And the bag pattern does call for pockets so I am "safe" there.

I don't have anything else to go with the lining fabric...it is bright orange with yellow swirls on it. I have nothing even close to it. Since I am new to the cotton fabric world...made only clothing previously and don't even have stash from that...gave it to Goodwill or Salvation Army Thrift Store. I am going to go ahead and cut the 2 other 1/2s that I need...adding an extra 1/2" for seam allowance and pretend that's what the pattern calls for...LOL.

What I REALLY need is a larger cutting mat. Mine is small...12" X 18". I want one of the BIG ones.
