I guess I am the lone-man-out. I bought EQ7 a couple years ago and don't use it at all. I tried learning it a couple of times and just decided it wasn't my cup of tea. I have a habit of thinking I need something, getting it, and then deciding I really should have held on to my money. Good thing I can afford to make mistakes like this.

I have EQ6, and love it, but am dubious about upgrading to 7, as I have been told I'd have to log in every month or so to verify that I still own my program. Is this true - and if so does it mean that if I didn't do this by a certain date, the program will not work until it's done? This has happened to me after purchasing another program [for huge money ] and I'm not happy at all, I wasn't told about it before buying.

EQ just started an online lesson to help learn EQ7. It is called EQ7 jump start.

I also bought the embroidery module and it designs embroidery designs in most formats. It pays to get the instruction books available. It really helps.

So glad to see this thread--I've been thinking about investing in EQ7 also, but can't find the answer to what I'm really interested in--is it possible to scan in a picture of a finished top and then play with different quilting designs--both in EQ and also my own designs? If not, does anyone know of another program that would allow me to do that?? Thanks for your input. P.S. I'm looking to not just design a single block design, but be able to see how it would look both on single blocks and over a whole quilt.

You can bring a photo into EQ on either Layer 1, 2 or 3, and set quilting designs using a stencil or quilt block on layer 3. You could draw your stencil on the Block Worktable, and size it to any size you need for your quilt. If you have something drawn on paper, you can scan that in and import it into EQ to trace on your block worktable, to create the stencil. You can also change the color of the thread to see what different colors of thread might look like on your quilt. You could have multiple stencil designs and put them any where you want on your quilt or block.
There are so many things you can do with EQ, I wouldn't be with out the program. You can even use it to design NON quilting things. Use the Custom quilt and design a room layout, just make the "quilt" your room size, and create "blocks" that are the size of what you want to put in the room, then play around with where you want to put them. Instead of moving heavy furniture around to see what you like best. :-)
EQ is a great program, and like most things in life, you will get out of it, what you are willing to put into it. If you aren't willing to take the time to learn and use the program, you won't get much out of it. But if you decide you want to learn how to use it, and take the time to do so, you can accomplish a lot with the program. And the people at EQ are willing to listen to their customers, if you let them know you would like to be able to do something, they will do their best to write it into a future release of the program. They don't know what we the customer want, if we don't tell them.

You can also email their support at <[email protected]> and ask. I've always gotten really good and quick help from them.

I was told by a distributor at a quilt show that there was an interval before you had to let EQ7 phone home. However, if you had not used it for a while, it would request a call home for it to be active again. It did not kill itself.
I asked as I use 5 and I am on an XP box with no permanent internet connection. If I need to flash upgrade, I have to hunt for a cable long enough to reach the router. Therefore, 7 is out for me.
Since XP is no longer supported, using it offline is perfectly safe. So are just flash upgrades. All my other software was designed for XP, so I'm not switching.
