Hi QB - I have a large piece of white felt that was given to me. Can i use it for batting? I'm making a kids play mat -- one side is a single cotton/poly panel and the other is fleece. I made a small sandwich to test and it fairly firm, which is ok but wondering if it will wash ok.
Has anyone used felt before? I think its a poly blend -- the craft kind from Joanns.

I took a look at joann.com to see what their felt by the yard said. Apparently it is machine washable with cold water and low dryer.

Take your sample and abuse it. Measure the square before washing in hot water and drying and see what it measures after. Felts have different contents and it is best to see how yours behaves.

I wouldn't trust felt to be washable because of the way it is made.

Do what Tartan says first and if it seems okay use heavier quilting on it to hold it together, maybe up to three or four inch spacing.

if it is acrylic (craft felt) it will not launder ok in a quilt. craft felt is not meant to get wet. you might want to cut a square of it- put together a 'sandwich', zigzag the edges and toss it in the wash (launder it the way you intend to launder your play mat) see how it comes out.

I have used felt in table runners and potholders and had good results. ... not all felt is the same .. so take your sandwich and toss it in the washer and dryer a few times.

I would not trust felt on a quilt, as it mostly will shrink.

I have used Felt for place mats and table cloths and other. It works and washes fine. I like it because it is 60 wide and fusible interfacing is not that wide and more expensive.
