I fold mine so that it fits in what ever container I want to store itin. I set the container on end and fold it so it will fit across the end. I am using clear containers right now and sort by color. I need to move the shelves the fabric was on, and I have to refold to fit the space.
I know this isn't exactly what you asked, but this is one of those "It depends" kind of questions.

I use my 6x14 inch ruler. I fold the fabric in half selvage to selvage and then fold it again. I lay it out and lay my 6 inch ruler and fold it over and over. It looks great and all store with the folded edge out. I realized I could do this when I saw them using what looked like a narrow acrylic cuttting board and selling it for $15. When I could do the same with my ruler.

I found this on youtube, and have done it this way ever since. It stores perfectly. And I found out kwhite does the same thing! LOL

I fold mine pretty much the same way as the video, but sans ruler.

If I buy fabric in longer lengths (say 5 yards), I ask if I can have the cardboard bolt & fold the fabric around it. Most of the time, the fabric store will just give it to you.

That's how I fold mine, but not with a ruler in there. Comes from years of sales. I learned to fold those raw edges in to keep 'thread strings and more raveling.'

Hope you find it works for you!
Hugs,
Sharon
