I was watching Fons and Porter and the hint that a viewer gave was to take the felt circles you use on furniture legs to keep from marking the carpet, put two on them on the bottom of your foot control.

If you are balancing your heel on the floor and pressing your foot 'against' the pedal you are using it incorrectly. The ergonomic 'correct' position is to turn it 180 degrees and place your foot on top of the pedal and then pressing your food downward. It feels awkward at first but it does take the pressure off of the ball of your heel and spreads the weight distribution throughout your foot. It also keeps your foot pedal from sliding away from you!! Try it :)

I was wondering, after 35 years, what was the correct way to use the pedal.

I've got this mental image now of little Tink zooooming round the room riding your foot pedal Susie! I know that's not what you meant but that's what I saw! In a little helmet and goggles!

I sew barefoot so if mine runs away I just hook my toes round it and pull it back. :-D
