Okay I really like my Husky D1. Now I learn they discontinued that model. I was wanting to have a usb port put in and they want to charge $600(I do not have yet), I guess that is cheaper than a new embroidery thingy. Do you think a computer guy can do it? I just found all my stuff for my (get this) embroidery 3-D, now they are going onto 5-D. Why don't they update the old instead of coming out with an expensive new one every time. I know it is to make money, but darnd if I am going to buy it. I think I will stick with a straight sewing machine with a few stictches, far cheaper and allows me to buy fabric instead of all that other stuff.

But can a computer person take the machine apart and put it back together correctly ?

Is there already a port there and it just needs a new one or is the a new edition to the machine ?

Does it have a port now and need MORE ports?? If so, you can get a thing that you plug in and it has more ports. Kinda like a power strip.

I think that a lot of the hardware upgrades come back to software upgrades. The old software won't run on new computers and aren't supported anymore. I call the "pre-Vista and Windows 7 blues". Many hardware upgrades depend on the software so you might not be getting just a port installed but a whole new operating system for your machine. Probably not worth the money to upgrade it. I would buy a dedicated embroidery machine before I go through that issue again. Of course, I also realized that I have done far more free motion embroidery than preprogrammed designs so I'm slightly biased. I usually never need anything more than dropping feed dogs, a zig-zag or straight stitch.

I think your machine is suffering from what I the "pre-Vista and Windows 7 blues". Software drives a lot of hardware upgrades and unfortunately, the older software does not run on the new computer operating system formats. You may have someone trying to upgrade a port but it probably is not going to really solve your software issues. I found that after a long philosophical discussion with my dealer that purchasing a stand alone embroidery unit was by far cheaper (in the long run) than spending the money for a top-of-the-line sewing machine. I have a great sewing machine (so do you). You might want to look into options like this before you try messing with your machine because it sounds more like even if you fix the port you will still have the 3-D to 5-D issues.

You could go old school like I like a lot better (much of the time but then I don't make embroidered quilts, etc). My embroidery is free-motion (zig-zag or straight stitch and dropped feed dogs and I'm good to go).
