Walked in the bedroom yesterday to find my ds sitting in the floor happily cutting up scraps! he's 5! I have told him that that is not a toy and he knows he's not supposed to touch it. The temptation is just too great though. He was also cutting on the hardwood floor (can you see me cringing?) Maybe though he will be a quilter. he already says that when he is grown up he is going to have 9 kids......2 girls and 7 boys. he also knows how many of each kind of animal he wants to have lol! Anyone else have to hide the cutter from the kids? Maybe I will help him cut some squares out and sew them up later this week. maybe that will satisfy his need to cut!

LOL - reminds me of my youngest! Only with him it was the seam ripper. We had just decorated his room with matching sheets, blanket, curtains, etc....

He had to add his own touch! He decided to use my seam ripper to rip holes in the top sheet where he thought his feet would be. He said the sheet was too tight on his bed. Now get this, he was still so small that he only took up half the lenght of the bed anyway! The little stinker. And he didn't stop with that either. He decided to practice writing his name, with the sharp point of the seam ripper, on his chest of drawers!

And yes, I had it hidden in my sewing chest, which was hidden in my bedroom. Kids, no matter how closely you watch them, they wait until you are either in the bathroom or involved with something like cooking supper, and they go on a covert ops!

But, they are so cute - when they are asleep!

If he managed to "play" with the cutter without hurting himself - it probably would be an excellent idea to have him do it "the right way" and "in the right place" - and be all grown-up.

I don't know if it's true or not - but I've heard of very young children working in sewing factories - so - try it and see what happens. With supervision this time!

I gave my little granddaughter an old one minus the blade and she pretend cuts as she pretend sews. She is really starting to sew though,and learnng fast. She will be 4 in January

Play dough has a little wheel cutter that looks like a rotary cutter, maybe play dough and he can make quilt designs.

Tool box with a combination lock!!
I have a plastic toolbox that is about 16" long and about 8" high. It has a spot for a lock.
All the medications, batteries and 'sharp stuff' goes in that, the lock goes on and the combo is filed between my ears.
I might start easing up a bit, my DS is 10 now.

My GD is 13 now.But when she was 2 , Isaw her holding her little fingers. I said come here and let nany see . She had little cuts all over her fingers, and she said please dont tell mommy'Iask her how she did that ,and she said she was playing with that pizza cutter, and her mom told her not to,But guess what it was my rottery cutter ,Thank god it wasnt worse it was just tiny little cut ,But it sure was sore,

Fortunately seeing me bleed (and the lovely burn on my arm) have kept my very inquisitive 10 year old away from my sewing table. I take a little comfort in the fact that I've burnt myself more frequently with the iron since starting to quilt this summer than he has learning to cook this year.
