Great you found someone knowledgeable and close. If you subtrack the money you would of spent on gas, the repairs probably won't seem as bad.

People who do repair services are almost extinct. America is all about buy new. But newer isn't always better. I'm glad you found a repairman close by.

I have to make a 100 mile round trip to get my Pfaff serviced and a 200 mile round trip to get my Babylock serviced in the opposite direction. It's kind of a pain but they do good work.

I also have a Bernina. I am also way over due for my service. The Bernina dealer wants $79 to look at it.... and so I looked at another reputable sew and vac dealer. He will service for $39. He said if he finds anything that is covered by warranty, he would let me take it to an authorized dealer to fix. What do you think Is it worth the extra $40 ( that I could spend on fabric)?

SO glad you'll have a like-new machine. In my experience, Bernina dealers/mechanics really know their stuff! I was once getting ready to sew on my old Bernina 830 Record (the mechanical 830) when the bobbin thread wouldn't pull up. I was at a friends for a sewing day and the shop in OKC was closed due to a snow storm. So I searched online for Bernina, called the first number that came up and it was a dealer in Provo, Utah. After a question or two, he suggested that I didn't have my needle fully "loaded," and that is exactly what the problem was!
Enjoy your "new" machine!!
