    Dear all,

has anyone read the book, "Insider's Guide to Quilting Careers" by Merry May and Linda J. Hahn??

Currently I am a middle school librarian during the day and I desperately need to make a switch to something else. I think middle school educators need to have a special gift to work with this age, and I DO NOT have the gift.

also, I just read part of "Civil War diary Quilts" by Rosemary Youngs while sitting in a Barnes and Noble this weekend. It was a little pricey, so I didn't buy it (I plan to get it from my local library for free!!). If you are interested in Civil War quilts I would highly recommend it.

    thanks for any advice!

I teach computer to elementary school children now, but I was an Attendance (Truancy) Officer for elementary and middle school students. I agree you have to have a gift to work with the middle schoolers! They are aliens at that age......... hormones raging.... not a "child"; not an "adult".

I haven't read the book, what did you think and is it worth getting?

Rose, I laughed at your message about the middle schoolers. I worked at a private school for children with learning disabilities for four years. A majority of the kids not only had learning challenges, but also had behavioral problems to boot. I taught spelling in the oldest group, which was the middle school-aged class. A challenge? Yes. But I LOVED working with them and cried for weeks after leaving the school (I had to find a job with paychecks that would actually allow me to eat and pay bills!).

Thanks for the Civil War era quilting book reference. I'd like to check into it. It's funny.....I hated history in high school, but now I can't read enough of it.

Can't help you with the books, but I taught elementary kids while being housed in a middle school! Hormones!!!!!! It is a difficult task dealing with the little aliens! Love the description. Thankfully, most will grow out ot that stage, but sadly some will be stuck there forever! :? :?

I taught 6th grade for six years and LOVED the kids--I asked to move to 5th because it was the other teachers that were so mean.

I've not read the Guide to Quilting Careers book, but the Civil War Diary series is really good. I made a Civil War quilt for my husband. He is into genealogy and had many relatives on both sides of the Civil War. So I made a double T block and embroidered the names he came up with in each block, with their rank and state they were from. Used Civil War reproduction fabrics in blue and red. It hangs in the hall now and he just loves it and tells our grandchildren who each person was.

Okay Joyce and Rose, let me try to find them. Couldn't find them so took it down and put it on bed and took some new photos. Here they are. I embroidered Pres. Lincoln in the center block and crossed rifles in the one beneath it. Confederate and Union rifles, hard to see in this pic. How do you like it?
