On my quilt with Hawaiian prints I used an assortment of black on black fabrics. Worked very well. I found, however, that the more intense blacks worked better than the grayed blacks.

Persoonally I don't think you can go wrong using such lovely fabric but I remember somewhere I saw a quilt of 'shirts' applique. When we were there the Hawaiian print shirts were the common way for native men to wear
(near Toledo)

I love the 'postcards from Hawaii' quilt and you could cut the squares you have in half to make it nice size quilt.

love the brights, they make me smile and bring back memories of my visits to Hawaii
