Hi all - I know this is the most talented group of quilters in the world so I thought I'd see if I can get some help from you!

I volunteered to do the auction project for my daughter's 5th grade class (big school fundraiser). I have taken the kids handprints, and want to create a circle, starting with the teacher in the center, then round it out. I guess a spiral is a better description. I'm not very creative, and don't know how to "design" quilts. I was hoping one of you would know of a link, or a book, or something that has similar designs that I can reproduce. I let all the kids choose their fabric that I will use (they will be appliqued on, so it's quite a hodgepodge of fabric style and color. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Hey Rach...it you wanted to make it really simple...why not do something with a foundation...then just cut out a pieces to make up a spiral...applique them on and then apply the hands to that? Just a thought off the top of my head. I'll think some more....

This sounds like quite the undertaking, but should be lots of fun for you!

Thanks Patti - do I understand that you mean to put a spiral on a quilt, then lay the hands over the spiral?

I don't know if that's what she means, but I do think that makes sense. That way, theoretically, you could have the quilt made ahead of time, add the hands as they come in, and if you have a few stragglers, no big deal, quilt is waiting for them.

My mistake - my kids made quilt blocks. I was going to put them together. Well, I procrastinated... the last 2 days before school got out (please note, I had 9 weeks allocated), I put all 55 quilt blocks together. My boyfriend helped me as much as he could, and we spent many hours on this. So I would suggest, if you're a procrastinator like me, do something as simple as possible and do it as early as possible

Something like this would work. You could find a pattern that uses a wedge ruler for the circle, appliqué the teacher's handprint in the center, with the children's all around the outside edges. http://www.quiltingculture.com/pages...leidoscope.htm

Yes Rach...that is what I mean....just cut a spiral out of freezer paper to make your pattern....ok...let me start at the beginning.

1. tape together freezer paper at least as large as you want the spiral block.
2. fold the paper in quarters to find the center.
3. starting at the center, cut in circles with your scissors to make a spiral shape (or you can draw it first if you are more comfortable)
4. You now have your pattern. You can cut the spiral apart further to change colors if you would like to make it more interesting.
5. Now..applique the spiral pieces to your backing fabric using your favorite method..freezer paper...fusible...whatever.
6. Now you have your spiral done and can add the hands on top of those whenever you get them...

Does that make sense?

The pieced spiral that thimble linked for you would look great too..

Margaret Miller has a book that shows different layouts. You use graph paper to plan your quilt which takes a little time.
