    Default Help for newby please.

I am pretty new to quilting doing only a few log cabins with the Eleanor Burns book.
I wanted to do something different, so I bought a quilt kit with all the pieces precut. It has many shapes that of course I have never done before. It has been challenging and I did a lot of ripping.
I am working on the last block and things aren't fitting. I followed the directions carefully and made sure I use 1/4 in seam. I can't match the seams because the top and bottom are much bigger. I haven't sewn them together and I obviously need to rip the toop and bottom apart, but what am I doing wrong that the 2 pieces are this far off?

    Thanks for any help.

Sometimes, especially with pre-cuts, the pieces may not be exact. Can you make it fit by "jiggling"?

Sometimes fabric stretch too but I would bet they were cut a little different. Perhaps you could take off the triangle and make the seam bigger so the seams line up?

Just a thought, did you square up the center part before you added the flying geese units. This would tell you if the sides matched to the flying geese, if not you could center the square and trim the pieces are it. Hope this helps.

AZ Jane I tried that with a different block that wasn't as far off as this one and it puckered really bad.

I'm not sure I know what you mean. I measured the pieces and they were the size the pattern said they should be.

After I take it apart should I make the square smaller or the triangles?

Hi CRO. Let's see if I can put numbers to it. If the center square is 3-1/2" square and you added 1-1/2" strips to all 4 sides your piece would now measure 5-1/2" square There fore needing a 5-1/2" flying geese unit for each size plus the end squares to match the height of the flying geese unit to complete block. Wish I could do a hands on the help you. Your flying geese look to have a shallow "v" that mat be a seam side problem. Sorry

Make sure to position the center of the FG in the center of each block and each side is even with the block edge. Then you need to ease any extra fabric into the block on either side of the center. . I looks like the FG unit is very bigger then the center block so easing may be tricky. A sewing teacher taught to help to ease extra fabric **** spray the offending block with water so it is fairly wet and then let dry. The fabric should shrink a little and that should help with the easing. *** Also to help easing put the too large block on top and the smaller block on the bottom. This will help the smaller block stretch to fit the top. Also check for a tut on how to ease. I can not explain it easily.
