I find if you mix up the front and back you get increased depth in your project. Sometimes difficulty in telling the difference can cause trouble when paperpeicing.

I was wondering the same thing. I got a piece of batik and I
can't tell. Glad to hear this question and will be looking at the
answers.

In not so direct light it is actually easier to see the wrong side. It will be slightly duller in color and the thread weave stands out a bit more. Use a marking pen that fades or someother form of marking and mark each one on the back in one of the corners.

That's one of the perks of using batiks! I never worry which side to use....makes things soooooo much easier

A hint for you for next time, decide which side you like best and mark the back side every few inches with chalk pencil BEFORE you cut and you won't have to examine each piece as you get to it in order to be consistent.
Very good idea, I've been stumbling also with which side to use.
